This is Figure 1.2 from Ivan Edward Sutherland's January 1963 doctoral dissertation at M.I.T., "Sketchpad: A Man-Machine Graphical Communication System." It shows Sutherland using Sketchpad on a TX-2 computer. The icon above links to a PDF of this page (p. 11), but, really, you want to read the entire dissertation. (It is refreshingly readable!) See {Sutherland 1963a} Sutherland's thesis supervisor was Claude Shannon. These are the giants upon whose shoulders we sit.

Sutherland's Sketchpad was one of two systems which in my opinion were works of genius (the other is Varkon). If only we'd followed up on this bright beginning 50 years ago, I wouldn't have a problem finding good CAD software today.

Note: Sutherland's disseratation was published without copyright notice at a time when such notice was required to secure copyright. It therefore passed into the public domain upon initial publication. It has been reprinted subsequently, but this image is taken from a digitization of the original dissertation as reprinted on the "bitsavers.org" website at: http://www.bitsavers.org/pdf/mit/tx-2/Sketchpad_A_Man-Machine_Graphical_Communication_System_Jan63.pdf
