Mergenthaler's Autobiography (1898)

Biography of Ottmar Mergenthaler and History of the Linotype, Its Invention and Development . (Baltimore, MD: 1898). This volume, which is really an autobiography, contains photographs of Mergenthaler taken in 1879 and 1894. The 1894 photograph is clearly the one from which later paintings, such as the one in Willi Mengel's Ottmar Mergenthaler and the Invention of Printing (1954) are derived. This book is now extremely rare, but an excellent modern edition by Schlesinger (see below) is available.
