Technical Literature

The Type-&-Rule Caster

image link-topic-sf0.jpg

Reprinted technical and operational literature, for the Lanston Monotype Type-&-Rule Caster.

Note that since the Type-&-Rule Caster was derived from the Composition Caster, much of the technical information for the Composition Caster applies here as well.

1. Adjustment Books

image link-to-lanston-monotype-adjustments-of-the-type-and-rule-caster-1926-c2-sf0.jpg

Adjustments (1926)

Adjustments of the Type-&-Rule Caster: For the Type-&-Rule Caster Course of the Monotype School . (Philadelphia, PA: Lanston Monotype Machine Company, 1926.)

It doesn't matter, but this digital reprint was assembled from two physical copies. In the primary copy the gathering (signature) for pp. 47-54 was missing (but a duplicate copy of the gathering for pp. 23-30 was in its place). In this digital version, I used instead pp. 47-54 from another copy.

2. Plate Books and Parts Price Lists

Note: For Plate Books for the Type-&-Rule Caster, see the Composition Caster's Plate Books.

Parts Price List, 4th Ed. (1930)

Parts Price List[,] Monotype Casting Machine and Type-&-Rule Caster . Fourth Edition. (Philadelphia: Lanston Monotype Machine Company, 1930). A parts price list for both the Composition Caster and the Type-&-Rule Caster.

This is a link "up and over" to this book as presented in the Composition Caster Notebook.

The Lanston Monotype parts price lists are essential for maintaining these machines, even though you cannot buy new parts. They are the only source which identifies completely what parts were in fact on a machine. They also identify which parts constitute a particular assembly, feature, or attachment.

Parts Price List (1941)

Parts Price List[:] Monotype Type-&-Rule Caster . (Philadelphia, PA: Lanston Monotype Machine Company, 1941). An un-illustrated parts price list. First published March 1, 1941 and revised November 14, 1941. Together with a cover letter dated January 5, 1942. This is a parts price list specifically for the Type-&-Rule Caster, although of course it shares many parts in common with the Composition Caster.

As noted earlier, Lanston Monotype parts price lists are interesting because they describe what parts constituted particular mechanisms and attachments (and what attachments, accessories, and supplies were available).

Parts List (Typesetting Machine, 1952)

This is the Parts List (no prices) from 1952 for the "Typesetting Machine" (that is, the Composition Caster). The Type-&-Rule Caster shares many of these parts.

Cleaning Lead and Rule Molds 1R, 1RA & 1RB

Directions for Care and Cleaning Continuous Strip Lead and Rule Molds . (Philadelphia, PA: Lanston Monotype Machine Company, 1921). Printing code: 8087-6-21-2M-Fr. This is the mold for casting continuous rule in the Type & Rule Caster, not the mold for the Material Maker.

"Style 1RA Mold, for HIgh or Low Tie-Up Slugs and Electrotype Bearers in 12-point."

"Style 1RB Mold, for 6-Point Column-Style Rule, also 6-point Standard Rules and High and Low Slugs."

It includes an illustrated Parts List which specifies in to some degree the variations in parts in these molds in very early serial number molds.

Full-resolution (1200dpi RGB PNG) versions of the Figures and the parts list illustrations from Directions for Care and Cleaning Continuous Strip Lead and Rule Molds . The Figures are 18, 7.5, and 16 Megabytes, respectively. The parts illustrations are each about 30 Megabytes.

4. Charts and Tables

The user of the caster may be interested in various charts and tables which apply to Monotype and other typecasting generally and are listed in ../../../../ Noncomposing Typecasters -> General Literature about Machine Typecasting -> General Machine Typecasting Practices -> Charts and Tables (some of these tables of course are simply those presented here).

"Monotype Display Type Wedge Positions for Casting Type Bodies 2 1/4 to 36 Points in Width." Printing code: 8036-7-52-500. Thanks are due to Sky Shipley of Skyline Type Foundry for preserving this document and making it available.

Here, since this document has been a bit difficult to track down, is a full-resolution PNG of it (1200dpi): lanston-monotype-display-type-wedge-positions-2p25-to-36-point-8036-7-52-500-1200rgb-crop-7678x8084.png. It is quite large (83 Megabytes); you almost certainly don't need it.

Another version of this chart, probably earlier, seems to have been intended specifically for the Monotype Thompson Typecaster. The data in both versions are the same, although the column labels differ and the present chart has additional notes. The Thompson version is at ../../../ Sorts Casters (Exlcuding Monotype) -> The Thompson Typecaster -> An Anthology of Source Materials -> "Table for Conversion of Set Width Markings on Matrices to Points and Decimals of an Inch" (TC 8036) . The scan of the present version, however, is more legible than the scan of TC 8036.

This is a later printing, regrettably less well-preserved, of the Display Type Wedge Position chart 8036-7-52-500 (see above) .

Varigear Attachment / Casting Speeds

"'Monotype' Varigear Attachment" (recto) and "Average Casting Speeds for Moulds Used on Composition and Type and Rule Casters." This contains Lubrication and General Instructions for the Speed Reduction Unit and the 'Monotype' Varigear variable speed unit. On the verso it contains charts of recommended average speed values for material from 1 1/2 point lead/rule through 36 point display type.

Unfortunately, this is an English publication which is still in copyright in the US, so I cannot reprint it. The link here goes "up and over" to the main presentation of this document in the Composition Caster section - where you will find only a note to the effect that it exists but I cannot reprint it.

My thanks to Kevin Martin of The Papertrail Handmade Paper and Book Arts for preserving this document.
