At time 7:50 in Kellerman. The Creation of a Printing Type. (Film, 1933) Goudy is shown using a depth gauge to check a Lanston Monotype display format matrix that he has just engraved. The scene is very quick, but it is just possible to discern that he first checks the height of the matrix itself (presumably he's previously set the dial to zero for this) and then checks the depth of drive of the matrix.
