1. The Collet "Native" to the Machine

This machine's "native" collet type is the now rather rare Rivett No. 4, New Style (i.e., "4NS") collets .

I had hoped that this particular machine came with an adapter for 5C collets, as 4NS collets, new, run at least $150 each while 5C collets, new, can be had for $8 or less. I'm halfway there: it came with a collet drawbar for 5C, but no 5C spindle.

It did come with a reasonable set of usable, though not pretty, 4NS collets. I've since augmented that with others. The most surprising addition was a 9/16 collet which came with my Hjorth lathe back in the mid 1990s. I now have the following 4NS collets (all sizes in inches):

As I ended up buying the last 4NS collet that Max Mitchell's Flywheel Machine Tools had in stock, I asked if I could also buy the two nice wooden collet storage blocks that he'd photographed them in. He agreed. It's nice to have genuine Gorton blocks for storing the collets properly.

The machine also came with a 1/2 Hardinge collet marked "ZA" or "2A" which is not, in fact, a 4NS collet (body diameter too large, length of taper too short).
