1. The set screw in the knurled, left-handed-thread cutter head is not a hex/allen screw (unless it has been replaced by a user, of course). It takes a splined wrench/key with an unusual 4-spline (equal-armed-cross-shaped) pattern. This was originally New Hermes p/n 31-210-00. Replacement spline wrenches are sold by SMU Engraving Supplies: http://www.aberro.net/accessories/index.html
[TO DO: photograph screw and key.]
2. See the chapter on "Pantographs Not Suitable" for typographical punch/patrix/matrix engraving, in the CircuitousRoot book "Making Matrices," for a discussion of the two quite distinct styles of New Hermes depth mechanisms. (The New Hermes machines are excellent for their intended purposes, of course.)
