This drawing is fanciful in more ways than the obvious. Whether the men shown are working on a type or (as is more likely, since this is a Mergenthaler publication) a punch, the lowercase 'e' shown would almost certainly not fill the entire body. (I know from an example in my possession that a Mergenthaler punch for a lowercase letter was of a size to accomodate any letter in the face.) Still, it's a fun image.
