These are photographs taken by Marjory Collins for the Office of War Information. They are in the "Farm Security Administration / Office of War Information Black and White Negatives" collection of the Library of Congress, Prints and Photographs Division . They are all in the public domain (as are the versions of them here).
In each case the version linked-to is a full resolution PNG that I have created from the original TIFF downloaded from the L of C. Regrettably, for this series of photographs the highest-resolution digital versions available from the Library of Congress are not very high resolution. Since the Library of Congress URLs have changed at least once, instead of citing the URL of the original image, I'll cite the call number.
Collins' photographs of the New York Times' operations form an extensive set which covers all aspects of daily newspaper operations. Here I've copied only those images which show Teletypes, but the entire set is worth a look. In the FSA/OWI BW Negatives collection, search on "new york times newspaper."
Wire Room
"New York, New York. Wire room of the New York newspaper. Copy boy about to tear off dispatch from Associated Press wire." Call Number: LC-USW3- 009010-D [P&P]. September, 1942.
Wire Room, AP Dispatch
"New York, New York. Wire room of the New York Times newspaper. Copy boy about to tear off dispatch coming over Associated Press." Call Number: LC-USW3- 009032-E [P&P] September, 1942. (Unlike many of the OWI/FSA images, this one has been digitized at a reasonably good resolution. The link above is to a full-size, full-resolution PNG which is about 6 Megabytes.)
Receiving a Dispatch via Western Union
"New York, New York. Wire room of the New York Times newspaper. Telegrapher receives dispatch by Western Union from Times correspondent somewhere in the United States." Call Number: LC-USW3- 009058-E [P&P]. September, 1942.
It is a little difficult to make out what is happening here. The telegrapher in the foreground appears to be receiving a message via a conventional telegraph sounder in a resonator mounted on a swing-arm (his resonator would be to the left, outside of the frame of the photograph). He appears to be keying it into a Teletype. The motor-driven unit to his right might be either a Teletype Reperforator or Transmitter-Distributor (I'm not sure which). The back of another Teletype unit appears on the desk facing him.
Syndicating the News
"New York, New York. New York Times newspaper syndicate. Correspondents of American newspapers which are syndicate members. In background, copy boy posts Times dispatches." Call Number: LC-USW3- 009091-E [P&P] September, 1942.
Milwaukee Correspondent
"New York, New York. New York Times newspaper syndicate. Correspondent of a Milwaukee paper, a member of the syndicate." Call Number: LC-USW3- 009089-E [P&P] September, 1942.
All of the OWI images here were created as official US federal government photographs and are in the public domain. The digitized versions of them at the Library of Congress and the re-presentation of these here remain in the public domain.
