Shab Levy's Gravitrek formerly at the Children's Hospital, Portland, Oregon (Destroyed)

This Gravitrek was created by Shab Levy in 1984. It was located for five years in the lobby of the Children's Hospital in Portland, Oregon. It measured 220" x 20" x 108" and used 5" plastic balls. Levy says of it that "It had a handle which the kids could crank to lift the balls to the top. Those rolled in the hardwood tracks, very softly, except for the 'music' they played while hitting the chimes. I designed the sequence and to a less successful degree, the tempo, to play the first dozen or so notes from Schubert's Unfinished symphony."

This work was dismantled and lost during a renovation of the Hospital.

The following images of this Gravitrek appear through the courtesy of the sculptor, Shab Levy.

This second image, which shows the sculptor in front of his work, gives a good idea of the scale of the piece.
