Good Time Clock IV (Rhoads, 1984)

Pictures

David Ide (dide@dgsys.com) took the following pictures in 1991 and has been kind enough to allow their inclusion here. They show Rhoads' Good Time Clock IV as it stands at the Santa Barbara, California, airport.

Interpretive Text

The following interpretive text, in English and in Spanish, appears on the glass case enclosing the sculpture. As it is difficult to read this in the scanned picture, it is transcribed here. This text was posted without copyright notice; my assumption is that this is publication without copyright notice and that this text is thus in the public domain.

George Rhoads (United States, b. 1926)
Goodtime Clock IV, 1984
mixed media
Lent by the David Bermant Foundation: Color, Light, Motion

George Rhoads is a New York-based sculptor whose works are found in
many public collections throughout the nation. He is among a number of
contemporary intrnational artists experimenting with non-traditional mate-
rials, including physical sources of energy, light and sound in order to expand
the possibilities of art in today's world.

Goodtime Clock IV is the major example of Rhoad's [sic] experiments with
these materials. It has been widely viewed since its creation and was
installed at New York's LaGuardia Airport for two years. A more intimate
example of his work, Wallpiece XVI, is currently in Santa Barbara's Franlin
Community Center. Because of the obvious merriment created by Rhoad's [sic]
sculptures a smile is the most prevelant facial expression among viewers of
his work.

Goodtime Clock IV is the lead sculpture to an exhibition occurring summer
and fall 1990 at the University Art Museum with major support from the David
Bermant Foundation: Color, Light Motion is organizing this important exhibi-
tion of works by these artists who welcome late 20th century science and
technology as the basis for their art.

The City of Santa Barbara's Visual Art in Public Places committee is coordi-
nating the placement of similar works of art in such public places as the
Santa Barbara Airport, Franklin Center, Central Library, Eastside Library, and
the County Courthouse in order to demonstrate the vitality of this art and the
breadth of its appeal to comtemporary audiences.

[I apologize for any errors in the transcription below. Despite the best efforts of my teachers, I cannot read Spanish.]

varios materiales

sigulentes lugares públicos, Franklin Center, Central Library, Eastside
