The Ludlow System of Slugline Composition

Douglas McMurtrie, 1927. The link from the icon here is to a version I've uploaded to The Internet Archive. An abbridged version of this appeared in The Inland Printer in August, 1927.

The Typography of a Small Newspaper

Douglas McMurtrie. (Chicago: Ludlow Typograph Company, 1928.) This doesn't say much more than "pay attention to typography, and, by the way, use a Ludlow." This is a single-file PDF created from the Hathi Trust digital version.

Newspaper Experiences with the Ludlow

(Chicago: Ludlow Typograph Company, 1930.) This is a survey of powerful newspapers and their use of the Ludlow. For the most part it illustrates impressive newspaper buildings, but there are a few photographs of machines. The Elrod gets a postscript. This is a single-file PDF created from the Hathi Trust digital version.

Some Reasons Printers Prefer Ludlow

(Chicago: Ludlow Typograph Company, n.d.)

Technical note: Page 5 (PDF page 7) may look a little odd. The original was slightly larger than my scanner. For most pages, this didn't matter, as they had substantial blank borders. On page 5, though, the images ran to the edge of the sheet. For this page, I reassembled a version out of two scans, each reduced in size by about 10 percent.

Some Ludlow Time Records (1939)

(Chicago: Ludlow Typograph Company, 1939) Ludlow ran a contest at their booth at the Graphic Arts Exposition (NY, 1939) pitting the Ludlow against hand setting. The Ludlow won, of course. This booklet gives the results.

This is a most imperfect digitization, as the booklet is slightly larger than my scanner. Still, it includes all of the material, even if it fails to do justice to the full layout.

Ludlow Time Records (1959)

(Chicago: Ludlow Typograph Company, 1959) In 1959 Ludlow repeated their Estimating Contest at the Graphic Arts Exposition in NY. Naturally, the Ludlow won again. This booklet gives the results.

This is a most imperfect digitization, as the booklet is slightly larger than my scanner. Still, it includes all of the material, even if it fails to do justice to the full layout.

This document appears here through the very kind permission of Paul Aken, proprietor of the Platen Press Museum in Zion, IL.

Some Reasons Printers Prefer Ludlow (Circa 1960)

(Chicago: Ludlow Typograph Company, [n.d., circa 1960])

Technical notes: Page 5 in this PDF is actually the reconstructed page 5 from Some Reasons Why Printers Prefer Ludlow [blue-cover], above. I could have reconstructed the page from the scans of this edition, but the page is identical in both and I got lazy. I have reconstructed as a separate page the centerfold gutter between pages 18 and 19 of this edition.
