Monotype: A Journal of Composing Room Efficiency was the house organ of the Lanston Monotype Machine Company.
Most of the digitizations here are those done by Google and presented by The Hathi Trust; they are of indifferent quality. Note that the binding process of the original NYPL copies did not preserve the issues intact, and that additional errors (and omissions) of pagination may have occurred during Google's scanning and my own attempt to interpret the result and reassemble individual numbers.
The apparent page sizes in the PDFs of the NYPL copies vary in a most annoying manner. This is inherent in the digital images presented; I did no additional processing to make all pages look the same size (at the risk of losing even more digital information).
The bibliographic identification for each volume is quite repetative for those volumes extracted from the Hathi full-volume scans. My hope is that in the future other scans will become available which may be presented in parallel, at which time this repetative identification boilerplate will beome necessary.
I scanned Vol. 21, No. 72 (Aug. 1927) myself from my own copy; it is an imperfect, but better, scan.
I have made some attempt here to identify Lanston announcements of "new faces." If you are a type historian unfamiliar with real type, note that what are announced here are actually matrix fonts (for the Monotype this means matrices for a typeface at a specific body (point) size in a specific set of sorts (usually for a given keyboard arrangement)).
Here is the Hathi Trust digitization of the NYPL copy of volumes one and two as a single PDF: (170 Megabytes): monotype-a-journal-of-composing-room-efficiency-v01-02-1913-1915-google-hathi-nyp-33433035160070-png.pdf

Vol. 1, No. 4 (Aug. 1913)
This number presents a puzzle. The NYPL binding for volumes 1 and 2 of this journal separates most of the covers from their issues and places them at the end of the bound volume. The front and back of the cover for Vol. 1, No. 4 are present there (and in the Google/Hathi digitization). However, the actual content of No. 4 seems to be missing. Moreover the pagination between No. 3 (ending on p. 64) and No. 5 (starting on an un-numbered p. 65 and continuing to p. 66) is continuous. Thus, the PDF linked here contains only the cover.

[Unknown pages] (1913-1915)
The binder of the NYPL copy of Volumes 1-2 of this journal removed all of the covers (except that of Vol. 2, No. 1 which served as a marker for the start of the new volume) and bound them at the back of the book. (One charitably assumes that those covers which are missing were missing before the binding.) The binder probably also removed all back covers (it's hard to tell in a digital version). It is likely that the two pages linked here were the back cover of one of the numbers, as they are bound after the covers in the book. An examination of the physical edition might, or might not, be able to suggest the number to which they belonged. As it is, all that can be said is that they are two pages, probably a back cover, from somewhere in Vols. 1-2. This practice of mutilating a book in binding it was curiously common.
Vol. 3, No. 1 (May-June 1915)

[Unknown pages] (1915-1916)
The binders of the NYPL copy removed all covers (except for Nos. 1 of each volume, which served as markers) and bound them at the end of the texts. They seem to have discarded back covers entirely, with this one possible exception. This sheet was bound after the texts, but before the first of the covers. It is apparent from the show-through of the border of the "By-Products" page that it is the recto of which the page showing the back of the Monotype plant is the verso. It is not possible to determine from the digitization to which issue this presumed back cover belonged. I'm placing it here because, thematically, it fits well with the front cover of Vol. 3, No. 1.

Contents:
Vol. 21, No. 72 (Aug., 1927) - Bruce Rogers
This issue features six advertisements designed and supervised by Bruce Rogers which appeared in 1926-1927. It is notable because it identifies the exact Lanston Monotype ornaments used by Rogers.
This digitization reproduces all of the printed material from the original journal, but fails to represent the original margins. It does not therefore represent the layout of the page as Rogers intended. To this digitization of this issue I have added scans of one of the ads as printed by Lanston Monotype as an individual offprint (with slightly different text in it identifying Rogers).

The issues of Monotype: A Journal of Composing Room Efficiency reprinted here were published in the US without copyright notice at a time when such notice was required to secure copyright. They therefore passed into the public domain upon initial publication. These digital reprints remain in the public domain.
